Cree's Cadiant LED Skylight

Cree Lighting started with a mission to change the way the world was lit with superior LED lighting. That mission was revived with the debut of Cree’s Cadiant system. This quick video explains the concept behind Cadiant - the why.

Alright so that’s why Cree developed the Cadiant system, but what is it? Well in essence, it’s stunning lighting system meant to replicate how the sun moves through the sky in your area, in real time. This 72 second video give you the core concept.

It’s important to think about this less as a lighting fixture and more as a skylight from a design perspective. To put it plainly, this is not your typical 2x2 troffer. The ambient light is created by the 4 side panels, as the center panel shifts in color to replicate the sky. In both color temperature and angle, the light quality will shift. But to create this effect, the Cadiant fixture is a bit deeper than the typical troffer. Without that depth, it would be impossible to pull off the illusion.

But once we’ve gotten past the idea of this fixture as a typical 2x2 the applications become really interesting.

Personally, what I really like about the system is that it marries form to function. Too often, we talk about human-centric lighting in (ironically enough) in terms of the technical. How much “circadian blue” are we hitting people’s retinas with at a given hour of the day? The Cadiant system answers a more fundamental question, how do we bring the outside in? How do we make people feel better? Aesthetics matter in this regard. That’s why I love the design of this piece.
