Moulin Rouge! Was incredible, go see it and be inspired.

I finally got to see Moulin Rouge on Broadway last night. I was utterly blown away.

Derek Mclane's set was absolute magic. Just when I thought he was out of tricks another amazing visual arrived. The design succeeded in making us feel like we were inside the club, but then expanded to bring us to alleys and apartments and the streets of Paris. I kept being surprised over and over and thrilled each time.

Justin Townsend's lighting design was utterly amazing. I sat watching the show and moment to moment I knew how things were done. I was just amazed by the level of detail and the brilliant choices made moment to moment. From bold flashes of light to incredibly thoughtful and subtle shifts from cold white to warm white, the design was intricate, intelligent and so much fun.

Catherine Zuber's costume design was pitch perfect. Sexy, bold, with flashes of color and big statements. The entire production seemed to take the stance, "let's go for it!" And with expert execution each moment was a total success. If you're coming to NY, go see it. It's a wild, fun, extravagant ride.

Theatrical lighting is how many of us got in this business and it never ceases to inspire me. The design team on Moulin Rouge absolutely nailed the aesthetic of the show. I'm lucky that I can get into broadway theaters every so often and get inspired by incredible lighting design like Townsend's.
