What's Next For Delivered Lumens?

The SDA Showcase is in the rearview mirror, and while there's some fun in taking a victory lap, it's time to move forward. The showcase felt like the culmination of a year of re-acclimation post-covid. 2022 has been the year of returning to the office, returning to in-person presentations, returning to commuting, and re-learning how to do our jobs in the age of hybrid schedules and normalized remote work.

The SDA Showcase was proof that despite the many headwinds we've faced, whether it's the global supply chain, a tumultuous economy, or health crises, we can still host an in-person event featuring real spec-grade lighting hitting real objects witnessed not through cameras but retinas.

Demonstrating Erco Beamer on Ten in the Shed

For the last two years, you've all been good enough to indulge my various experiments with demonstrating lighting products virtually. I am not done doing Ten in the Shed Videos, but as we return to the office, I don't think that kind of content is what will best serve my friends, colleagues, and customers in the lighting industry and beyond.

Instead, I've been brainstorming with friends and colleagues on provocative and under-discussed topics within the industry. I also did some unscientific polling, and most people who follow me on Instagram and LinkedIn said they want to learn with video. So with that, I have a bit of a roadmap for the kind of content I want to make this year going into next year.

Some Topic Ideas:

  • What the Flight to Quality Means for the Lighting Industry

  • How to integrate lighting into the "mixed metals" trend of residential design

  • What is the metaverse, and what does it mean for lighting?

  • How do we start to design with sustainability in mind?

  • What is "medtail," and what lighting trends are we seeing?

  • How to design with maintenance in mind.

  • What is the Light and Health Research Center?

  • What's the state of Circadian science now?

  • How we can all make darker nights (beyond specifying dark sky fixtures)

  • How to handle Multi-Family residential lighting

  • What is the Green Light Alliance and why it matters

  • What does it take to develop new lighting fixtures.

If you notice, this list features 12 topics. This is not accidental. The plan is to release a topic monthly and see if people inside and outside the lighting industry are interested and if this can grow. I believe light is an important topic not just for lighting people but anyone with a working pair of eyes. Let's see if I'm right.

Are there topics you'd like to see discussed with industry experts?

Shoot me a message and let me know.
