How I Helped Create a Magic Mural at the Color Factory

How I Helped Create a Magic Mural at the Color Factory

Light and color have always been a source of fascination for me. That's why I was so excited when my friends at the Color Factory reached about a series of lighting upgrades meant to make the space burst to life. We had been planning those upgrades early on in 2020 when COVID-19 pulled the rug out from under us.

But I'm happy to announce Color Factory is open again, putting in place all of the necessary safety precautions for the pandemic. Part of that re-opening is the launch of RGBNYC. The piece is a commission by the artist Carnovsky.

RGBNYC is a floor to ceiling mural painted in the primary colors (of light) Red, Green, and Blue as well as White. Each color depicts its own NY-themed mural. The lighting trick comes in when you hit the mural with saturated color the different murals are revealed.

Cool, Right?

To achieve this effect, I turned to Martin by Harman and the Rush PAR 3 RGB. The instrument was readily available, which was critical to the project timeline, but it had some other critical features.

The project is deceptively simple, but ends up being a power effect. When you visit you’ll walk into some portion of a rolling series of saturated colors, punctuated by short bursts of white. It’s a visual trick but also a stunning experience. If you’re in NYC go visit the Color Factory. If you’re interested in design and color theory its a beautiful way to learn and experience color.
